Chiang Kai-shek

Leader of the Kuomintang and the Republic of China, Chiang led the fight against the communists and the Japanese occupation, and after the 1949 defeat established a nationalist one-party regime and martial law in Taiwan, combining militant anti-communism with authoritarian developmentalism.
