John IV of Portugal

The Duke of Braganza acclaimed king after the Restoration of 1640, John IV ended the Iberian Union and led Portugal in war against Spain to recover its independence. He founded the Braganza dynasty and sought diplomatic alliances to sustain the new kingdom.
