Mikhail Gorbachev

The last leader of the Soviet Union, Gorbachev launched perestroika and glasnost, liberalizing the economy and the press, reduced the nuclear arsenal with the West, and allowed the fall of the Berlin Wall, precipitating the collapse of the communist bloc.
