IPIP-VIA-R · 96-item character strengths scales
How to answer. Describe your usual behavior as honestly as you can, rather than how you feel you should behave. Rate how accurately each statement describes you. Consider your everyday tendencies across situations.
How it is scored. Four responses per scale. Positive-keyed responses keep their 1–5 value; negative-keyed responses use 6 minus the response. Each scale is summed from 4 to 20 and displayed as its scored average from 1 to 5. All 96 responses are required for a complete profile.
What the evidence supports. The cited preprint reports studies of these balanced short scales in U.K. and German samples. Reliability varies across scales. Published source evidence does not independently validate Ownfacet’s ordering, interface, or explanations.
How to interpret it. This is the public-domain IPIP-VIA-R, a distinct instrument from the VIA Institute’s official survey. Scores describe self-reported tendencies; they are not population percentiles, verified abilities, diagnoses, or judgments of moral worth. Spirituality items cover particular beliefs and do not define the worth or meaningfulness of a secular life. Close rankings are not established meaningful differences.
All twenty-four scales stay visible. We do not force a list of “signature strengths” or treat close scores as meaningful differences.
These four-item scales describe self-reports. A lower response average does not establish a weakness, a lack of virtue, or a bad person.
This uses the public-domain IPIP-VIA-R rather than the VIA Institute’s official survey. Ownfacet’s fixed interleaving preserves all source statements and scoring keys.
