Lyndon B. Johnson

A Democratic president from 1963 to 1969, Johnson launched the Great Society and the war on poverty, created Medicare and Medicaid and signed the Civil Rights and Voting Rights Acts, but escalated the Vietnam War, which destroyed his popularity.
